2022 SSC High School Senior Sustainability Achievement Award Winners

The SSC High School Sustainability Achievement Award is presented to a Sharon senior who made a significant local, regional, national, or global contribution to creating, promoting, or supporting sustainable living. This is SSC’s third year of soliciting applications for the award, and the number of applicants has grown steadily. The SSC Board has given out a total of $1,250 in award money since 2020.

“There are kids in high school who are ready to engage, and willing to focus on the environment and take action. SSC decided three years ago that we wanted to highlight students who were putting in great effort,” says SSC co-founder and current Board member Dr. Ricky Stern. “This year we gave awards to students who have truly been able to demonstrate how they do this work in their spare time. We were totally touched by the things we read, and are really excited to be giving the awards. We are proud of all of the applicants.” The 2022 Recipients were Grace Miller-Trabold, Benjamin Levinson, Elisa Van Dijk.

Award recipients have tested Sharon water for dissolved oxygen, educated about sustainable clothing, led local trash cleanups, organized climate strikes, participated in sit-ins at the State House in support of climate justice and the Green New Deal, protected natural wildlife, volunteered for Neponset River Watershed Association, co-chaired the SSC Youth Committee, served as President of the SHS Environmental Club, adopted vegetarianism, served as youth volunteer organizer for a local political campaign, founded Sunrise Blue Hills and trained its volunteers. The SSC Board is pleased to recognize the activism of our local graduating seniors. They make our future look bright.
